Google assigns a numerical weight to each website to determine it’s importance in a search on a scale of one to ten, which is called “page rank.”  Many think of a search engine algorithm as seeking a word or phrase entered.   However, this is not entirely the case.  Many search engines also try to find a satisfactory answer.  Back-links and social media networks can impact the page rank of a site as well.  This tells the search engine bots whether a site is informative and how many people think it relates to the search term. However, on September 18, 2012 Google launched the Panda Update, changing their search algorithm which now places less emphasis on back-links and more emphasis on having quality original and unique website content.

Google is constantly trying to develop the best search results for each user and updates their search engine over 500 times every year.   Google algorithms work on a percentage basis, looking at the percentage of unique content as well as good grammar.  Spammers became notorious for copying content from other sites and computer generated content this is why Google implemented the Panda Update.
